EMFs and Your Reproductive Health
Technology is awesome. It saves lives. It allows us to connect with people from around the world. It gives us information at the touch of a button. But with all this convenience comes harmful side effects. Many of which we never saw coming.
EMF’s, or Electromagnetic Fields, are invisible energy fields, or radiation, that form as a result of the man-made use of electronic power. As we see a growing number of so-called “western diseases”, we start to wonder- with all the medical advancements and availability of resources at our fingertips, why are so many people suffering from seemingly unexplainable diseases and ailments?
Rapidly spreading cancers, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic fatigue, the list goes on. People are suffering and much of it may be due to EMFs.
In terms of reproductive health, we’re also seeing more difficulties than ever. All over the reproductive spectrum, people are having difficulties with menstruation, conception, and menopause. Our reproductive health is a direct reflection of our overall health. So any factors that affect our bodies will have a direct impact on it.
We understand that EMFs are affecting us, but how exactly? EMFs are a natural part of living on this planet. The earth operates using a magnetic field, the sun and other stars emit EMFs, creating visible light. Even our human bodies and other beings emit a low level of them.
Where it gets tricky, is the mass amount of man-made radiation that is pulsing through the world at an unprecedented rate.
When radioactive fields interact with the tissues in our bodies, it causes a rise in temperature (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6025786/). This rise in temperature throws off the delicate balance that maintains our homeostasis, or natural state of being. When the temperature in our organs and brain increases especially over a long period of time, it can potentially lead to long term damage.
Exposure to EMFs also causes oxidative stress, which is when the number of free radicals in the body outnumber the number of antioxidants. These free radicals can wreak havoc on the body by damaging fatty tissues, proteins in the body, and even DNA.
This damage on a cellular level goes down all the way down to our nervous systems. Numerous studies throughout the past few decades have shown the dangerous neuropsychological effects of exposure to EMFs.
The systems of our bodies work harmoniously together, so when there is excess inflammation in the body and the nervous system is all out of whack- it creates a cascade of issues. Symptoms are often most obvious when we observe our reproductive cycle. This could mean painful periods, difficulty conceiving, or extreme menopausal symptoms. To care for our reproductive organs, we need to look at the body as a whole.
While the jury is still out on the negative impacts of longitudinal exposure to EMFs on a widespread scale, we can take measures to protect ourselves, while deepening our abilities to listen to our bodies. You may not be able to avoid working in front of a screen all day, or living in a modern city- but you can use the intuitive intelligence of your body to notice when you need to make some changes.
Here are some practical ways to mitigate EMF exposure:
- Turn off your cell phone data when you are connected to WIFI. While WIFI of course emits EMFs, it is less so than cellular data traveling from towers, through your body, to reach your phone. Even better is to put your phone on airplane mode.
- Pay attention to your bedroom: EMF expert, Brian Hoyer, the founder of Shielded Healing (https://shieldedhealing.com/), has built his business around helping people to mitigate the harmful effects of EMFs in their homes and beyond. Sleep is the foundation of a healthy life. Hoyer recommends first focusing on lessening your EMF exposure in your bedroom, or the room you sleep in. You can do this by avoiding plugging in devices in your room, especially behind your bed. Avoid using electronics before bed, as they can affect melatonin production- the hormone that regulates our sleep/wake cycle.
- Turn off, or even unplug your electronics when they’re not in use.
- Turn off your WiFi router at night.
- Keep your cell phone away from your body. Avoid putting it up to your ear when talking by using headphones or speakerphone. Especially avoid putting it close to your reproductive organs (pockets) or in your bra, as this radiation can increase your risk of cancer in your reproductive organs.
- Consider doing a digital detox for a day whenever you are able to.
- Take time to ground down in nature, to help your body return to a natural state of being and regulate your nervous system.
It’s easy to get caught up in the almost dystopian worry that can come with learning about EMFs and other topics in this realm, but it’s important to not let it overwhelm you. Very few of us are planning on living in a cave anytime soon, so let’s do what we can to protect ourselves using what we’ve got. Technology is awesome, but we’re still learning how to live with it, and the effects it has on our wellbeing.
Issues with your reproductive health can be incredibly frustrating, painful, and confusing to navigate. If you are experiencing any abnormal symptoms, try taking baby steps to minimize your exposure to EMFs. If anything, you may just notice a decrease in stress from taking a break from electronics. Now who doesn’t need that?
